Splinters While walking the dusty streets of a ghost town, I saw it nestled up against the sagebrush and a split rail fence. It sat resting (abandoned?) in the Wyoming grass, sides sagging. It begged a closer look. Walking around the wagon, it was clear it had seen quite a few miles of travel. The timbers were bleached, splintered, and cracked. But the chassis appeared sturdy, ready for more work. How far had it come along the Oregon Trail? Did it travel in a train of wagons, or did it venture alone, following the trail of wheel ruts? Ruts that were cut so deep, are even today still visible in many places. It is said as many as 400,000 settlers left Independence, Missouri heading across the prairie to points Northwest along a trail that ultimately ended in Willamette Valley in Oregon. Regardless where this wagon began its journey, the cargo it carried, or the distance it traveled, here now it rests. ... See more
